How to Inherit the Earth: Artists and the Environmental

Alan Sonfist, a pioneer of narrative environmental art and a leader in the Earth/Land Art Movement, will discuss his work. Sonfist will refer to one of his most recent projects: The Lost Falcon of Westphalia commissioned by Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein for his estate outside Köln, Germany. The lecture will then focus on his recently announced Time Landscape Network, a vision for the 21st century New York City metropolitan area, with specific reference to the redevelopment of Collect Pond Park in Lower Manhattan. Sonfist proposes to create a sculptural monument of the original pond which lies underneath the city’s concrete surface and access its water source which provided the early settlers with their drinking supply. He will also discuss a current private residential project in upstate New York where he is transforming a woodland area into an environmental sculpture in a first-of-its-kind dialogue with a leading contemporary architect.
